AJM Institutional Counsel and Strategy provides legal counsel to higher education and healthcare institutions navigating transformative and enterprise-threatening decisions at the intersection of law, governance, and public accountability. Founded by Andreas J. Meyer, the Firm serves as a strategic partner to leaders seeking to pursue opportunity, protect core values, and preserve governing autonomy in environments of heightened scrutiny and change.

Andreas’ judgment is grounded in a deep understanding of how colleges, universities, and healthcare systems operate. His advisory work is mission-first, focused on helping clients advance teaching, research, patient care, growth, and innovation while ensuring they have the legal structures, governance authority, and discipline necessary for the long term.

Andreas advises presidents, general counsels, and senior leaders on strategic initiatives and enterprise risks where academic objectives, business realities, and public oversight converge. He is fluent in both academic and business logics and provides legal advice that helps leaders convert risk into opportunity. Andreas helps organizations transition from a brittle "rules-based" compliance model into a mission-driven risk analysis framework. This shift is designed to ensure that institutional decisions are grounded in durability and values rather than simple regulatory adherence.

The Firm is engaged when issues cut across legal, political, and operational silos, or when institutional leaders must find their footing in novel, reputationally sensitive, or high-stakes environments. The Firm’s work centers on clarifying decisional architecture, sequencing choices, and aligning governance, operations, and external engagement so institutions act with coherence rather than reaction.

Andreas advises on matters where legal judgment and operational reality intersect. Areas of expertise include academic freedom and free expression; the civil rights laws, including Title VI, IX, and VII and the ADA; research security and technology risk; international and overseas operations and affiliations; large-scale events and infrastructure initiatives; student and employee discipline; campus safety and threat management; student health and welfare; privacy; accreditation issues; and major gifts and naming arrangements. He oversees internal and external teams charged with anticipating and responding to critical incidents, government inquiries, lawsuits, and reputational hazards. In each case, his role is to help institutions structure choices anchored in mission and values, led by opportunity, while mindful of risk.

Engagements are tailored to institutional architecture. Where an established legal function exists, Andreas serves as an external strategic ally, reinforcing internal counsel and facilitating cross-functional integration when additional senior perspective is needed. Andreas also functions as a play caller, assisting leaders in selecting specialized outside counsel, supervising those engagements, and integrating their work so legal strategy is aligned with institutional mission, priorities, and executive voice. Where institutions require a turnkey top-of-house legal advisory model, the Firm provides integrated, full-service legal counsel designed to support executive- and board-level decision-making.
